Selections Sound

Colony's Lineup More Or Less Known

INSIDE-LEFT POSITION MAIN BUGBEAR

(By "STICKS")

The Interport Hockey Selection Committee is to be congratulat- ed on its selection of the 15 players invited to make the trip to Macao, for the Interport metch on Sunday, February 19.

I selected my team on Sunday afternoon following the final trial, and based my selections on performances wit- nessed during the Triangular Tournament, the Hong Kong Hockey Association Tournament and the Interport trials and was almost certain that the Selection Committee could do no better than nominate my eleven players among their fifteen.

It seems fairly obvious that the probable lineup in the Inter- port match will be Goodwin (goal), Bond and Gonsalves (full- backs) and Hook, Reed and Malik (halves).

With the attack, however, everything will depend upon form in the practice matches the In terport team are likely to have before the final "trial.”

IMPORTANT T.T. HOCKEY MATCH

CLUB MEET ARMY TO-MORROW

(By "STICKS")

Contrary to previous arrangements, the all-important Triangu- lar Tournament hockey match between Club and Army, which was originally scheduled for Wednesday, February 8, will now be played to-morrow afternoon, on the Army ground at Sookunpoo, bully-off at 4.30 p.m.

·

The competitions for the Pearce Cup and Helen Knill Cup, will be drawn for on the Central British School ground and play will com- mence sharp at 3 p.m.

Although most of the Caer Clark Cup teams are more or less in the process of selection, Hong Kong Ladies and "Y" Ladies have already.

Club are rather lucky that this leaving the left-winger very much made their selections, while St. An- fixture has been brought forward] alone! otherwise they might have had

to

field a forward line against Army on February 8 without both T. S. D. Whitley and B. I. Bickford, their inside right and left, respective ly, who are leaving for Home on Saturday!

S. A. Fowler and Partaub Singh are certainties for the wing-posi- tions, while Pritam Nath and Ken- nedy can be said to have earned their places as a result of their form

It is interesting to note that when in the Triangular Tournament and Club first published their team, V. C. in the first trial. This but leaves Bond, who has since been selected as full-back for the Colony's team to meet the inside-left berth, which will be Macao, was placed on the left-wing, a filled by either Nerain Singh, a logi- position he has filled almost through- cal choice in view of his under-out the season, but one in which he standing with Partaub Singh and was wasted. because of his great performance against Macao last Sunday when the scored the Kumaon Rifles' only point, or Pyara Singh.

The latter's claims to a forward berth are fairly strong, for although he was a trifle selfish in both trials, he scored a very good goal last Sunday, beating several defenders en route. I feel, however, that with Nerain Singh at inside left, Kennedy and Lt. Pritam Nath will be able to exercise better control over the left-wing pair.

The following 15 players have been selected to travel to Macao on Sunday, February 19, to meet the Macao hoc- key Club in the annual Interport match:

V. C. Bond (Club).

S. A. Fowler (C.B.A.).

M. R. Malik (K.I.T.C.).

Lt. Goodwin (R. Navy).

Lt. Hook (R.A.).

Lt. Cdr. Kennedy (R. Navy).

R. Marques (Recreio).

W. A. Reed (Club).

J. Gonsalves (Recreio).

Lt. Pritam Nath (Rajputs).

Pyara Singh_(K.I.T.C.).

Rfm. Partaub Singh (K. Rifles).

L/Nk. Nerain Singh (K. Rifles).

N. Whitley (Club).

Lt. Woods. (R. Navy).

The two umpires selected to travel

to Macao, with the Colony team are R.

Henderson and K. Hussein.

The women's doubles title was ro- tained by Miss Nancy Wynne and Miss Thelma Coyne, who bent Mrs. Westa- cott and Mrs. Hardcastle 7-5, 6-4. In the mixed doubles John Bromwich and Misa Wilson lost their title to Mr. and Mrs. H. Hopman, 6-8, 6-2, 6–8. ----Reuter.

of

most Having witnessed

Club's more important fixtures this season when Bond has been on the left-wing, I was surprised to note in the majority of matches that play. was concentrated on the right-wing and in the centre,

at

To-morrow Bond will be seen right-back in partnership with E. V. Reed, while R. A. Bates will be seen on the left-wing.

Teams for to-morrow's match are as follows:

and

drew's and Central British Associa- tion Ladies are nearly decided upon the players they will field.

"Y" Ladies will be represented by Mrs. Burke and Miss A. Fowler, in the rear line with Mrs. Stone and ARMY:-Pte. Osman (R.A.O.C.);

Miss M. McCaw as halves. Their L/Bdr. Carter (R.A.) and Rfm. Badda forwards will comprise Mrs. 0. Ram (Rajputs); L/Sgt. Fraser (R. Burnett (Captain), Miss B. Harker Scots), Lt. Hook (R.A.) Hunt (R.A.) (Captain); Hav. Shaw-

Capt. and Miss M. Smith. A rather for Wali (Rajputs), Lt. Indarjit Singh midable combination. (Rajputs), Lt. Pritam Nath (Rajputs), and L/Nk. Nerain Singh (Kumaons) Rfm. Partaub Singh (Kumaons).

CLUB: V. M. Benwell; V. C. Bond and E. V. Reed; H. J. D. Lowe, W. A Reed and N. B. Whitley; S. A. Fowler, T. S. D. Whitley, G. E. R. Divett, B. I. Bickford and R. A. Bates.

Hong Kong Ladies' senior will be represented by Miss E. Gray and Miss I. Hutchison, as backs, Miss

as

Pope and Miss R. Smith, halves, and Miss M. Simpson, Mrs. F. Dalziel and Miss M. Smalley, forwards. It will be seen that the strength in this lineup, like the “Y” Ladies, is well distributed in attack and defence.

St. Andrew's Ladies are not quite decided upon their team and will not know for certain until to-morrow evening or possibly Thursday morn- ing. They have plenty of talent at their disposal, however, and I can visualise their lineup being some- thing like this:

Miss G. White and Miss P. Petigura (backs); Miss J. Wong and Miss A. Greiner (halves) and Miss. F. Wong, Miss P. Gittins and Miss E. Churn (forwards).

A SOUND LINEUP

It will be seen that I have tran- sferred Miss Petigura to the full- back division where she is likely to be more at home in a gruelling seven-a-side game, while Miss A. Greiner; an inside-right, I have re- legated to the intermediate line in partnership with Miss J. Wong, thus leaving three fast forwards for the attack. I don't think they can improve upon this.

TWO JUNIOR TEAMS' Central British School's senior and junior teams are not likely to be known until Saturday. Hong Kong Ladies and "Y" Ladies are both entering -Junior teams which will be as follows:

HK Ladies; Miss O. Green and Miss D. Baker or Miss R. Smalley; Mrs. J.

Littlejohn, and Miss G. Swan; Mrs. B. Goldman, Miss J. Greig and Miss V. Blackburn.

"Y" Ladies!-- Mrs. White and...... Mrs. Trimmer Miss R. Deirne, and Miss N. Hurst; Miss N. Eardley, Miss V. Brad- bury and Miss I. Buchanan.”

Recreio, Diocesan Girls. Seaforth Ladies and Central British Associa- tion Ladies' teams are not known.
