YOUNG WOMAN SENTENCED FOR INFANTICIDE

FOUND TO BE ENCEINTE

EXAMINED IN THE SUPREME COURT PREMISES BY DR. L. D. PRINGLE AND DR. H. T. BEE AND FOUND TO BE WITH CHILD, A 22-YEAR-OLD CHINESE MOTHER, LAU SHUK-HING, WAS SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT AT THE CRIMIN- AL SESSIONS THIS MORNING BY THE CHIEF JUSTICE, SIR ATHOLL MACGREGOR, FOR THE MURDER OF HER 18- MONTH-OLD BABY DAUGHTER.

""There is only one sentence which I am; empowered to pass on you and that is that you be confined to imprisonment with such labour as you are fit for, for a term as long as your natural life.

"I will support the jury's strong recommendation to mercy and you may rest assured that the sentence which you will serve will be consi- derably less than that which I have formally passed on you," rémarked the Chief Justice to the prisoner.

In the witness-box this morning, accused' stated that she had form- erly studied at the Yeung Chung Girls' College. She married when she was eighteen and was taken by her husband to Kongmoon, where her mother-in-law was in charge of the household. Her husband returned to Hong Kong and sent money to his mother. was given $2 monthly but was con- tent with this amount..
