HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS

A PAN Muffini serving us

PANORAMA of Italian history,

commentator, is unrolled in a new, extensive stamp set consisting of 10 postage and three air-mail values. We see significant events or people from the founding of Rome in 753 B.C. to the conquest of Ethiopia in 1936. Each stamp is embellished with an original inscription of Mus- solini, to which is appended a flour- ishing M in Il Duce's own hand writ- ing. We submit the translations of these cogent comments.

The 10 centesimi stamp, in brown,

founder pictures Romulus, the

of Rome, marking out the city with his plough. The inscription reads: "Fol- lowing the sign of infallible destiny", and the date 753 B.C. is included.

On the 20c carmine-rose, dated 30 B.C. appears the head of Augustus Caesar, greatest of the Roman Em- period of perors. Rome had her greatest glory in the reign of Augus- tus and so firmly did he establish her power that it endured through two centuries of mediocre and sometimes vicious rulers. The fitting remark, "Coordination of all forces under the orders of one man" appears to the right.

The 25c green value is devoted to the immortal Dante, whom Mussolini describes as "The most lofty genius of poetry". The dates of Dante's life and death-1265 and 1321-form part of the stamp.

Christopher Columbus, "The most audacious navigator of the seas" is portrayed on the 30c brown, which bears the date 1492. Honouring Co- lumbus, the most widely portrayed figure in philately, is something Italy waited quite a while to do.

"The most profound mind in the arts and sciences" would belong to only one man, he who is generally credited with being the most versa- tile person of all time-Leonardo da Vinci. The stamp is the 50 c value in violet and two examples of the great man's endeavours are present- ed, a statue and a flying machine. The dates are 1452 and 1519, mark- ing the span of a truly busy life.

The Roman Empire came to an end in 476 when Odoacer proclaimed him- self king of Italy, the first man to bear that title. His kingdom; how- ever, was vastly different from the

United Kingdom of to-day. It took many centuries for that unity to be achieved, during which Italy was

broken up into many independent states, occupied from time to time by most of the European powers. Napo leon made Italy a French dependency and by finally blotting out all bound ary lines awakened a feeling of na- tionalisation among the people which was to lead to L'unified nation. The period of consolidation, was from 1821 to 1870. Many great men play- ed-a-part in this work, but the tyro leaders w re Garibaldi and Victor

Emmanuel II, grandfather of the prosent monarch. These men are portrayed on the 75c red stamp with the inscription "The passion for unity breaks out”.

The dates 1915-1918 appearing on the 1.75 lira blue stamp are self- explanatory and the beautiful design reproduces the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Rome. Mussolini says, "The sacrifice was great but not in vain.

over,

"The victory was won and for- ,"describes the entrance of the first Black Shirts into Rome in 1922, an event pictured on the 1.75L gray- black stamp.

The conquest of Ethiopia in 1936 made an Empire of the Italian King- dom. The 2.75L stamp in blue-green bears a map of the conquered terri- tory on which is the crown of Abys- sinia, The Cross and Fascist sym- bol appear at the left and right of the central design. The comment is "An empire of civilisation and hu- manity for the peoples of Ethiopia." Victor Emmanuel III is honoured on the 5L red-brown. Mussolini says, "Of him I have no doubt," and pre- sents the king's likeness.

The air-mail stamps are devoid of inscription. Briefly described they are portrait of Victor Emmanuel I on 25c green and 3L brown. Dante, 50c dark brown and 11, purple; Leon- ardo da Vinci, 2L blue and 5L green.

THR

SUBWAY HONOURED

HREE years ago Russia issued a very attractive stamp set to ġlor- ify the Moscow Underground Rail- way, or Subway. Now comes an- other set for the same purpose with streainlined designing. The new stamps are larger than the previous issue and while the designs are sub- stantially the same, the treatment is much more impressive in the 1938 version. The station platforms are spacious, and beautifully designed, the station building, pictured on the 30 kopecs stamp printed in purple, is a gorgeous edifice. The remaining five values picture different aspects of the platforms and long vistas of subway tracks. These stamps are: 10k., brown violet, 15k dark brown, 20k gray-brown, 40k brown, 50k brown.
