The largest airliner ever built for regular commercial airline service, the new Pan American Airways trans-Pacific Clipper, is coming to San Francisco for its final trial flights prior to going seats make up into an upper and different compartments. The wide into regular service on the 9,000 mile clipper route between here and Hong Kong.
This ship, the first of a fleet of six being constructed at a cost of $4,000,000 and to be allotted for service early in the new year on both the Atlantic and Pacific, will run her final trial tests from the Port of Trade Winds lagoon at Treasure Island.
Following these she will go onto the run to Hong Kong, operating from the new. Pan American base to be established at the site of the Golden Gate International Exposi- tion on Treasure Island.
Just as the new home of the trans-Pacific clippers has been call- ed the finest air marine terminal ever designed, so is the new clipper ship recognized as the finest and largest air carrier ever built. De- signed to perform in the air as 411⁄2 -ton ocean airliner, the new clip- per by displacement is two times as large as the CHINA CLIPPER and nearly twice the weight of that already famous trans-Pacific flying craft.
The new clipper, with other of her new sister ships scheduled to follow her into service shortly thereafter, will make her first re- gular passenger flight to Hong Kong by way of Honolulu, Midway, Wake, Guam and the Philippines, from Treasure Island on or about the opening date of the Exposition. She will be assigned to a place in the regular weekly trans-Pacific. operating schedule along with the PHILLIPPINE and CHINA CLIP- PER in which some 16,500,000 pas- senger miles have already been log- ged. Before entering this service, the new super-Clipper will be sent on a non-passenger engineering shake down flight from San Francisco to Hong Kong and return. This will climax an exhaustive series of trial tests for the new clipper, to be run for approximately sixteen days dur- ing January from Treasure Island. A number of the most important world airplane records for speeds with load are expected to fall dur- ing these routine tests, which will be concluded with a ten-hour, over- night non-stop flight.
THREE-DECKER
In size, spaciousness of passenger and crew quarters and in the mat- ter of interior decorating, the new Clipper excels as the last word in air transport design.. Including the crew's quarters and the cargo hold, the craft is constructed in three decks.
The passenger deck is divided in- to 9 separate sections. Five of them are standard passenger compart- ments accomidating ten passengers each, the sixth is a half-size com- partment for four passengers. The dentral section is a large room which may be alternatively furnish- dd either as a lounge or dining dalon. The aft-most section is a de luxe compartment which may be used as a bridal suite.
