When Dulcie Tibbenham, a 17- year-old domestic servant, was placed on probation for a year, in Suffolk, for stealing a £1 note, she was ordered not to go to a cinema for six months.

She was also told to be indoors by 9 p.m. in summer, and by 8 p.m. in winter.
