FRENCH QUARTERS AGAIN

FIR AGAINS DENY SUGGESTIONS OF BRITISH MEDIATION IN ROME

Paris, To-day. The arrangement by which Mr. Neville Chamber- lain and Lord Halifax are meeting M. Daladier and M. Bonnet in Paris, in the course of their journey to Rome on Tuesday afternoon, is a friendly gesture emanating from the British side and has nothing whatever to do with pro- posals for mediation in Rome.

This statement was made semi-officially yesterday, following rumours that the British Prime Minister would discuss the Tunis and Corsica agitation on behalf of France.

It is pointed out that in view of the present tension prevailing be- tween the two countries, negotia- tions of any kind would be inoppor- tune and that as long as the present Italian press campaign continues, there can be no possibility of un- derstanding.

Paris circles make the Italian press directly responsible for the tension asserting that under pre- sent conditions, even the cleverest diplomat would merely burn

his fingers should he attempt to in- tervene.

Flying from Hupeh, 18 raiders appeared over the town in the afternoon and concentrated their attack on the aerodrome and the river crossings.
