ULTIMATE FATE OF THE ** EARTH

The Astronomer Royal, Dr. H. Spencer Jones, delivered at Gold- smiths' Hall the Norman Lockyer Lecture of the British Association for the Advancement of Science.

Dealing with the planets, he sug- gested that Mars, which now lack- ed oxygen,

an essential for life, was in a state which the would one day reach.

Investigations of recent years, : he said, had led to the following conclusions concerning the planets: Mercury. The evidence of an atmosphere on Mercury is not fully conclusive, but faint and transient shadings on the planet have been in- terpreted as indications of an atmo- sphere. It is certain, however, that most of the original atmosphere must have been lost.

Whenever organic matter is buried, as in coa. measures and oil deposits, so that it cannot. become oxidised and decay, there is a net gain of oxygen to the atmosp here.

IMPORTANT CONFERENCES IN ROME

Rome, To-day.

Three important conferences took place on Saturday in the Italian Foreign Ministry, the first being when the British Am- bassador, Lord Perth, visited Count Galeazzo Ciano in connec- tion, it is assumed, with final ar rangements for the visit of. Bri- tish statesmen next week.

The American Ambassador, “Mr. William Phillips, called at the For- eign Ministry in the afternoon and although no announcement was mɗde concerning the reason for the visit, it is believed that it was for the purpose of inquiring about the Italian answer to the message of President Roosevelt relating to the solution of the Jewish problem.

Political círcles state that Musso- lini is working on an answer, to President Roosevelt in which he will explain the Italian viewpoint. A third visit was made by the Hungarian Minister, Baron Villany, who called to explain the frontier-in- cident which occurred on Friday near Munkacs.

This frontier violation has aroused considerable - concern in Italian circles although the press has made no editorial comment, evidently awaiting the report of the investigating committee. Trans-Ocean,
