Underworld Takes Vengeance
In Sing-Sing
Man Who Dodged Death Is Killed
New York, December 14.
The avenging hand of the underworld reached within the walls of Sing-Sing to-day.
Convict Matthew J. Kane was stabbed in the neck as he walked along a corrider in the prison three weeks after bullets meant for him took the life of a clerk, John O'Hara, in Woodside, New York.
Kane's death this afternoon on the operating table from his injuries was the epilogue to what seemed the motiveless murder of the clerk.
O'Hara was shot down as he walk- ed to his apartment-house by two men whom the police never traced. Detectives couldn't understand it. O'Hara was blameless, respectable, a routine young business man.
Then they discovered that on the night it happened Convict Kane was out on parole, and told friends he intended visiting relatives at Wood- side.

CHIANG INCARNATION
OF CHINA'S WILL TO EXIST
Berlin, December 20.
The Japanese offensive in Ching has been at a standstill since the beginning of October, and "Inside the country, General Chiang Kai-shek's prestige has survived his defeats and the nation, conalders him as incar hating the country a will to live," the Frankfurter Zeitung said to-day. It asserted that any new Nipponese advances may isolate their armies and might necessitate the sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of new soldiers and an enormous amount of money and raw materials.
On the other hand, it stressed the importance of the loans granted to China; the United States has already extended $25,000,000 worth of cre dits and Britain is also preparing to make an advance......
If these loans are continued, “it would mean that the Anglo-Saxon nations would assume the responsibility of supporting General Chiang fin- ancially and of supplying him with war materials.
"Then the Japanese recommending a war of attrition would lose their influence and their methods would have to be replaced by methods of force,"
," the Frankfurter Zeitung added.
'A ̈new offensive westwards, toward Yunnan and Chungking would bo necessary,”. It concluded.---Havas.
