SOUTH AFRICA'S GREAT RECOVERY

EDRICH FAILS AGAIN BUT GIBB PASSES HALF CENTURY

Johannesburg, To-day.

South Africa, who at close of play on Monday appeared to be in a precarious position made a brilliant recovery when play was re- sumed yesterday morning.

Chiefly responsible was H. Dalton (102), K. Viljoen (50) and A. B. C. Langton (not out 64) who between them raised the score from 166 for 5 wickets to within 32 runs of the England total.

In sunny warm weather, with a wicket still good and only showing the slightest signs of wear, 22,000 people the record attendance pre- viously was 18,000 when South Africa played Australia in 1936 saw Mitchell and Viljoen open to Farnes and Verity.

by the

Both batsmen were extremely cau- tious, but Mitchell was beaten

Farnes, an inswinger .from last ball of the second over, after adding only one run to his overnight score. He had hit only three boun- daries in an innings which had lasted 240 minutes. He was pati- revealed a ence personified, and skilful defence.

season at the expense of the hard fighting Trojans by 14-13.

The Canadian Ladies Wahoo game was a ding-dong affair, but was one of the most exciting tussles played on the Filipino Club ground.

The standard of play was much| better than in former Ladies League games. Until the sixth in- ning it was anybody's game with the score 7-5, but at this stage, the "Maple Leaf" team lost their grip allowing two costly runs. »In the last stanza, the Wahoos garner ed five more runs to cinch the game.
