Although adding only 96 runs to their overnight N. Gordon st., Ames, b God-
total, England's score of 422 was considered reasonably good, and the soundness of their position was revealed by the comparative fail- ure of the South African batsmen, with the ex- ception of Bruce Mitchell, and Nourse. Goddard, the Gloucester spinner, did the hat-trick, and brought about a sudden change in the out- look after Nourse and Mitchell had added nearly 120 runs for the third wicket. Close of play score was 166 for 5.
FARNES BARRACKED Mitchell opening South Africa's Farnes, innings brightly against who, on bumping the ball on several occasions was barracked, and Edrich, scored 30 in 24 minutes and reached his 50 in 98 minutes.
When he had reached 56 his part- ner, Vanderbyl was given out Lb.w. to Verity for 4. Alan Melville, skip- first pering South Africa for the time did not last long, Verity div ing and rolling over while taking a return catch to dismiss him for nought.
A. D. 'Nourse, was 38 and the score was 109 for 2 wickets when tea was taken.
On the resumption accurate bowl- ing by Verity and Goddard together with a well placed field kept the batsmen subdued. Mitchell did not score for 50 minutes after tea but then Nourse hit Hammond for 3 six to complete his half century in 109 minutes.
NOURSE OUT
His partnership with Mitchell added 100 in 125 minutes. When he had scored 73 Nourse's fine innings came to an end when he succumbed to Goddard. His knock had occupi- ed him 163 minutes and was a grand exhibition of cover driving. His best scoring strokes were six and six fours.

Then came a spectacular piece of work by Goddard, Gordon, who succeeded Nourse, was stumped by Ames off his first ball and-Wade was clean bowled with the next ball giving Goddard the "hat-trick.” Goddard kept an immaculate length: and was very fast off the pitch.
Viljoen and Mitchell played out time.
