THE DAILY SHORT STORY
A POOR ALIBI
"THERE are only three people," said Detective Lem Tucker, "who could have murdered Karl Willson."
"Who are they?" I asked. "There's Jerry Walker. He was Wilson's business partner. That gives him

"You'll probably find out in the end that it wasn't any of those three."
"No I don't," said Tucker. - The 'dark horse' murderer only appears in story books. Want to come with me?" "Sure," I said. "Whom do we see first?"
"Mrs. Willson will be the easiest to get at."
News of the killing wasn't public property as yet. It would be soon though, and I knew Tucker wanted to work fast. We drove out to the Will- son estate in Westside. There was a doctor's car in front. A maid answer- ed the door. She wasn't going to let us in until Tucker showed his badge.

Walker saw us at once. "Yes, yes. he agreed soberly, "I've been". advised what happened. Dreadful! Dreadful! Who do you suppose could have done such a dastardly thing?"
"That's what we're aiming to find out, Mr. Walker. Where were you Two around 3 o'clock yesterday? forty-five to be exact."
Walker darted a quick, appraising look at Lem. "Where was I? Do you mean you suspect me?-Ah, well let me see, Humm. Hang it, where was I? Detective, you'll have to give me a few minutes to think."
"One place is as good as another," Lem grinned, "in your case."
"
Ten minutes later we were back on the street. "So you figure Walker is the man, eh?" I said.
Lem shook his head..

A quarter of an hour later we again drove up to the Willson home. The maid told us Mrs. Willson was slee- ping..

Mrs. followed the maid upstairs.. Willson looked at us with annoyance.
"Haven't you already disturbed me enough?" she began, but Lem cut in.
"Not quite, Mrs. Willson.. This time we're. arresting you for murdering your husband: Oh, don't look shock- ed: We know all about it. In fact, we have an eye witness to your. deed.".
The doctor was coming down the stairs as we entered the front hall.
"How is she, Doc?" Lem asked. "O.K., if we ask her a few questions?" "The shock has upset her," the M.D., explained. "Make your visit as brief as possible."
Mrs. Willson was propped up in bed. She smiled at us weakily.. Lem got down to cases at once. "Don't want to make it hard for you, Mrs. Willson. I'll be as brief as I can. Where were you when it happened?"
"At my bridge club. We met at Mrs. Whecler's. I-I-you'll think me silly-I had a premonition that some- "An eye. witness? But that's-im- thing was happening to Karl. I was possible! "Well," I chuckled, "what did that get you?"
"Come on," said Lem, "we'll go call on Maise Libby."
Maise Libby lived in an apartment at the other side of town. We were lucky to find her in.
"Your boy friend's been knocked off," -Lem said.
She caught at her throat, "What boy friend?"
"Hal" said Lem, and grinned. “Coul. dn't catch you with that one, eh? Karl Willson. Where: were you at 2:45 p.m., yesterday afternoon.
"I haven't the faintest idea. I mean -why, I guess. I was here. Yes, I'm sure I was.” "Alone?"
It wasn't until the next day that I had a chance to see Lem alone.
"How did you figure it?" I asked. "It looked to me as though Walker was the man."
Lem grinned. "Walker couldn't think where he was at the time of the murder. If he had been guilty he'd have had an iron-clad alibi. In fact, Mrs. Willson was the only who had an alibi. She said she was drinking tea and had a premonition. Ha! I called
