CHINA APPROACHES NEW

YEAR WITH CONFIDENCE QUEEN'S

London, To-day.

“China approaches the New Year with confidence, based not only on the impregnable position of the National Government and our leaders and the valour of the Chinese people, but by virtue of the increased international readiness to help China," said the Chinese Ambassador, Mr. Quo Tai-chi, to Reuter yesterday.

The reasons for supporting China became daily more formidable, he said, through Japanese depredations on British interests.

The United States, by granting China credit bor- rowing facilities, underlined the spirit of fin- ancial co-operation by saying that this may well be only the beginning.

LONDON GETS A THAW

London, To-day. London experienced a thaw yes- terday afternoon after the severe cold of the last few days and the snow has now disappeared from the streets, but further north, snow was still falling and many villages on the Lincolnshire Wolds were completely isolated, and there and in Yorkshire, many roads are unpassable.

With relief from the frost, south- east Essex in the afternoon found its transport difficulties renewed by the descent of a very dense fog.:
