MUSSOLINI'S

VISIT TO SARDINIA

London, Yesterday. To-day's ' visit of Mussolini to Sardinia has captured the at- tention not only of French politi- cal circles but of British as well, the, belief being that Il Duce will make a pronouncement which will have a direct bearing on the at- titude to be adopted by Italy at the time of Mr. Chamberlain's visit.

"The Times" is convinced that Mussolini's speech will be milder in tone than had been expected, and that he will not utilize the occasion for attack- ing France.

Basing its conclusion on the more moderate trend evident in the Italian press, the paper be- lieves this due to unequivocal rejection by the French Foreign Minister, M. Bonnet, of any Italian claim to French territory as well as to Mr. Chamberlain's statements on the question.

THE BACKGROUND After discussing, the historical background to the Tunisian pro- blem the paper expresses the view; "Regardless of Italy's wishes in respect of Tunisia, the question of territorial revision cannot be regarded as deserving of serious Jonsideration."

Italy waited until a moment when France was struggling with internal problems to make her de- mands, but Mussolini's strategy failed because the external threat merely provided the impetus need- ed by M. Daladier to overcome dif- ficulties at home.

The huge sums being spent by Italy for armaments are also ex- amined by "The Times" which, discounting the defence factor, asks why Italy needs such a gig- antic military instrument, since no one is threatening either the Ita- lian mother country or any of her possessions. Trans-Ocean.

Rome, To-day. Accompanied by an important retinue of Ministers and high officials, Mussolini visited Sar- dinia yesterday and inaugurated a new coal-mining town which he christened Carbonia, or "Coal City," which has been built on the most modern lines.

During a brief speech, in which he made no reference to foreign affairs, Il Duce emphasised that, a new centre had arisen where pre- viously malaria had reigned.

He claimed the town would soon double its population, which is now 12,000.-Reuter.
