Mr. Wilkins was near the ex- ploding point when his neighbour met him on the street.

"That man Tompkins," he burst out, "has more nerve than any one I ever met!"

"Why?" asked his neighbour curiously.

"He came over to my house last evening and borrowed my gun to kill a dog that kept him awake nights."

"Well, what of that?"

"Why," shouted. Mr. Wilkins, "it was my dog he killed!”

The alert Shelby "Democrat" reports the case of a man who was defeated somewhat ignominiously when he ran for the office of Sheriff:

He got 55 votes out of a total of 3,500. and the next day he walked down Main street with two gung hanging from his belt. "You were not elected and you have no right to carry guns," fellow citizens told him.

"Listen, folks," he replied, "a man with 'no more friends than I've got in this county needs to carry guns.” -
