RACING of a really hie Meeting, which was held before an excep. ACING of a really high standard was witnessed last Saturday at

tionally large gathering of racing enthusiasts, which must have con stituted a record for an Extra meeting.

Mr. V. V. Needa had the satisfaction of scoring two wins, one a dead-heat, but the meeting was unfortunately marred by the dis- qualification of Tampa Bay in the first section of the Portobello Handicap.

The first race, the Tynecastle Handi- cap over six furlongs was contested by novice jockeys who were given mounta on "D" Clazs China ponies. On the rise of the barrier, Piet Hein, which was nicely handled by Mr. C. F. Chiu. jumped away together with Meteor, whilst Estover was about half a length behind, followed by Valorous,

Shortly after passing the 134-mile nost, Tampa Bay bored out, but Mr. Wei, the jockey, managed to get it under control and it was soon racing among the leaders.

Coming into the straight,

a great struggle ensued with Tampa Bay gradual'y forging ahead, followed closely by Lucky, which was running very strongly, and Scenic View.

THRILLING RACE

The second race, the Blackford Hill Handicap for Australian ponies of this season, over a mile, was really a thrilling spectacle to watch. It was a grand race, although the finish was not as close as one might expect.

The start saw Murray River (Mr. Hearne) take the lead. followed by

Little Audrey (Mr. Wade), whilst Mr. Needa did not seem worried over the fact that King's Privilege was last.

Running strongly, Murray River forged ahead and coming into the straight appeared as if it would win, but it had to reckon with King's Pri vilege, which was sent forward just before the Rock and, by the time the straight was reached, was within striking distance.

After passing the two mile post, Mr Needa found a willing response from King's Privilege and amidst great en- thusiasm passed Murray River yards from the end, and Murray River had to fight hard to retain second position against Little Audrey.

SECOND SUCCESSIVE WIN Then came the great race of the day, the St. Andrew's Stakes, which Mrs. Dunbar had the satisfaction of winning for the second year in succession.

There was a great deal of speculation as to which pony would win, the most serious contenders being:

Red Feather (Mr. Wei)

Moonlight View (Mr. Pih) Wild Life (Mr. Tang) Expansion Time (Mr. Needa) Rob Roy (Mr. Encarnacao) New Star (Mr. S. W. Pan), which came in second, very nearly created an upset. The race started with Jober (Mr. Raymond) taking the lead, fol- lowed by New Star, Rob Roy and the rest, Red Feather being satisfied to remain in the middle. At one stage Oak Bay was leading, but could not maintain its pace and, after passing the last quarter post, Jober took com- mand. Coming into the straight, Jober was still leading, but was seriously challenged by Red Feather and New Star, Reaching the mile post, New Star was just ahead, but Red Feather provided the stronger finish and won with two lengths spare. New Star had the better of the struggle with Moonlight View. It was a most interesting race to watch, and I think that credit must be given Mr. Wei, who handled Red Feather with fine judgment, coming forward as he did at the most opportune moment.

A DEAD HEAT Barely had spectators recovered from the thrill which the previous race had provided, than they witnessed another close finish, in which the Judge could come to no other decision than to give a dead-heat.

The old rule caused many arguments 'n snooker. Last season at Thurston's Davis, in placing the cue-ball to break off, touched the brown with his hand and was penalised four points.

ROSE EVELYN STILL GOOD The last race of the day revealed that Rose Evelyn was undoubtedly a far superior animal among the second section of the "C" Class China ponies. As on the previous occasion, Mr. Potts found difficulty in getting the ponies away due to Rose Evelyn and Soldier of China misbehaving, and when the barrier did rise these two were left behind.

It did not take Rose Evelyn long, however, to make up lost ground and by the time the Rock was reached, it was actually in front. Carrying 168 lbs. I hardly expected to see it run- ning so strongly, but once it Was ahoad, there was no chasing it, as it increased its load to win by two lengths,
