That night the evening edition of one of the larger Los Angeles papers. carried a scoop. Hiram Adams, the scoop said, had dispatched a messenger to a girl in Mountain Falls, Me., bear- ing a personal letter. The messenger was even now speeding over the dark countryside in a chartered plane. What did the message contain? Had Hiram had a romance when hiding out in Maine that he had been keeping a dark secret? Was the letter a proposal of marriage?

The next day a hundred reporters besieged Hiram. He couldn't deny the letter or the messenger; and on secont thought he'd better not say what he thought of a kid who hadn't any more sense than to jump to such fantastic conclusions.

Speculation ran riot. - Radio stations worked ovartime, Telegraph wires hummed. The world was agog.
