A KINGDOM CELEBRATES

THIS year Bulgaria marks the 60th anniversary of independence and the 20th year of King Boris'. reign. Philatelic tribute paid the occasion consists of a five stamp set featuring as many portraits of King Boris. The 1 and 7 levas portray him in the uniform of a general; the 2 levas bears a bust portrait; the 4 levas shows the monarch as of 1928, and an admiral's garb adorns him on the 14 levas value.

Way back in 1896 King Boris re- ceived his first postal honour when a stamp was issued to mark the oc- casion of his baptism. The design for that adhesive was the throne of Bulgaria. King Ferdinand, father of Boris, was then the ruling mon- arch of the Balkan kingdom. Dur- ing the World War, Ferdinand cast his lot on the wrong side, an error that cost his country considerable territory. It also cost him a throne,

400th anniversary of the

Tfounding of Asuncion is honour-

ed on two new stamps from the South American Republic. The de- sign is the Oratory of the Virgin of Asuncion, National Shrine of Heroes. The values are: 5 pesos, olive-green, and 11 pesos, brown.

Stamps picturing, the new sover- eign appeared as regular issues in 1919. He was married in October, 1930 to Princess Giovanna of Italy. Portraits of the royal couple appear on two commemorative stamps issu- ed for the occasion.

MANY. FLAGS PICTURED SOUVENIR sheet to be issued by Guatemala for the first Cen- tral American Philatelic Exhibition promises to be a very colourful af- fair. The sheet consists of six stamps, each picturing the flag of a

issue two new designs in a forth- coming series. For the lower values a design in horizontal format will be used picturing a desert scene with three natives on camels against a background of tents and mountains. The higher values will appear on a vertical design picturing a native couple.

NEW SWISS ISSUE

FROM Switzerland comes a new...

stamp set to remind the world that, come what may, there, in the Alps, is a nation dedicated to demo- oracy.The thred designs in the set. symbolise the Swiss theory of gov ernment. Two values depict scenes dominated by Nicholas Von der the Flueh, the monk who brought Swiss Confederation into being at the Diet of Stans in 1481. He is pictured addressing a group of peo. ple on the 3Fr., brown-red stamp: while the 5Fr., blue-black depicts the Diet of Stans. On the 10Fr., yellow- green a man is casting his vote while fellow citizens await their turn.

The island of Papua is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its annexa- tion to Great Britain and a new stamp issue forms part of the fes tivities thereof. Five values will appear in a uniform design. A.har- bour scene at Port Moresby forms the design and the values will be: 2, 3, 5 and 8 pence and 1 shilling.
