REMARKABLE CRISIS
DISCLOSURES

How Close Europe Was To Ideological War
Secret Italian Naval Mobilisation
Rome, To-day.

Speaking in the Italian Chamber yesterday, the
Foreign Minister, Count Ciano, reviewed inter national developments in the last few months and revealed facts hitherto not generally known about the September crisis, particularly concerning the German-Italian understanding.
Speaking of the origin and development of the Czechoslovak crisis, Count Ciano recalled that on December 18, 1937, he had advised the Cze- choslovak Minister in Rome, Dr. Chvalkovsky, to come to a voluntary understanding with Warsaw and Budapest before Czechoslovakia should be compelled to do so against her will by the inexorable march of events.
After the Fuehrer's speech of September 12, in Nuremberg, it was clear that developments would move forward rapidly......
At the moment of Mr. Chamber- lain's first. Journey to Germany the Duce had defined the attitude of Italy and notified the Berlin. Government, that if a conflict be tween Germany and Czechoslovakia could be localised, the attitude of Italy would have to be re-examin- ed. But if the conflict should be- come general and if the anti- Fascist powers should make a pre- text for aggression against Ger- many, Italy, feeling herself threa ́tened, would have no alternative but to march on the side of : Ger-
many.
