Britain Making Further Representations On Yangtse Interference With Export Trade In Tsingtao

London, To-day.
The British Government cannot accept as valid the Japanese arguments for maintaining closure of the Yangtse River to British shipping, stated the Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr. R. A. Butler, in a written reply in the House of Commons yesterday to Commander A. Mars- den (Conservative, Chertsey).

Mr. Butler added that further representations had accordingly been made by His Majesty's Am- bassador at Tokyo.
COTTON TRADE'S CONTEST WITH JAPAN

Conditions in the cotton trade as affected by Japan and India were put in the forefront of arguments of speakers in the House of Commons yesterday.
Mr Butler made a further reply to Commander Marsden, and Mr. A. E. L. Chorlton (Conservative, Bury), in regard to alleged at- tempts by the Japanese naval mis- sion at Tsingtao to control British exports from China.

TSINGTAO SYSTEM
Mr. Butler said that a system had been enforced at Tsingtao for some months under which in addi- tion to the usual Customs formali-
ties, traders had to obtain export permits from the Japanese naval mission.
The British Government did not admit the right of the Ja- panese naval authorities to in- sist on this requirement.
