The political situation in France is discussed in lengthy editorials which express considerable anxiety, but at the same time hope that M. Daladier's endeavours to consolidate the situa- tion may be crowned by success.

The "Daily Telegraph" declares that the present developments in France are a discredit to De- mocracy which must be-"bread and wine" to the totalitarian states.

INSOLVENT, BORROWED £5,000,000

The Now. York Securities and Exchange Commission has disclos. ed that although the brokerage firm of Mr. Richard Whitney- -who was sentenced to “five to ten years"" imprisonment in Sing Sing last April-was involvent for three and a half years either he or the company succeeded in the negotiation of loans amount- ing to £5,472,300 during the three months before the failure.

Whitney repaid-eight commer- cial banks £4,718,000, leaving a balance of only £326,500, But, according to the Commission, he repaid only £98,400 of the £427, 800 borrowed from friends and Stock Exchange firms. ·

After criticising the attitude of the Secretary General of the French Labour Federation, M. Jou- haux, who declared that "liberty and life of the French nation are dependent on the workers' action," writes that it is good to know that. M. Daladier is determined to re- sist in any case.

Hesitation or retreat would be the worst service, that the French Premier could render to his coun- try. The paper then expresses the hope that reason will prevail in France.

The "Daily Mail" points out that France can mantain her position as a great power only if she in- creases her industrial production.
