Early issues 'bore alegorical de- signs representative of newly acquir- ed freedom-the Bohemian breaking his chains; the female figure of Czechoslovakin. breaking chains. The late Thomas Garrigue masaryk, president of the republic for 18 years, appears on many, many stamps. The ukeness of resident Denes has appeared on the most re- rent issues.
Two of the world's most famous composers were natives of Bohemia, a territory incorporated in Czecno- slovakia, and both men were honour- ed on commemorative issues in 1934. They were Friedrich Smetana and Anton Dvorak.
The greatest number of Czecho- slovakian stamp designs have been devoted to views of the beautitul scenery, ancient towns, cathedrals and historic castles in which the land abounds.
Recent issues have put special stress on the victories achieved by Czech forces during the World War. The most recent Czech stamp was a 1-koruna scarlet picturing Hrad-· cany hill in Prague, a familiar scene. to all stamp collectors. On the sum- mit of the hill is the fortified palace which housed the kings of ancient Bohemia. To-day it is 'the seat of government and residence of Pre- sident Benes.
