THE STAMP COLLECTOR'S CORNER

By Mariel Nissen-

PHILATELY ON WHEELS

the rising generation does not take to stamp-collecting: "en the masse", it certainly won't be fault of the United States Post Office Department, for that governmental body presided over by Mr. James A. Farley has many plans to cultivate stamp-mindedness among the young.

Recent stamp issues with their historical connotations will do much themselves to promote an' interest in postage paper among students, and now philately is being brought, liter- ally, to their doors.

A philatelic truck is being spon- sored by the government to bring to the youth of the country, especially those in rural communities, the most complete exhibition and collection of United States stamps ever assembled for such a 'purpose.

According to present plans, the truck will exhibit specimens of every United States stamp from the first issue of 1847, which consisted of two

the adhesives, to

present series which will number 32 by the end of the year. A complete collection of United States stamped envelopes from the original issue of 1858-1856 to the present time will also be in- cluded as will post cards from 1872 to 1920:

:

A miniature printing press will be used to print souvenir items for dis- tribution. The embyro stamp collec tors to whom this appeal is being made will be shown each step in the process of stamp manufacture, aided by actual working examples of steel dies, flatbed and rotary press plates, and transfer rolls. He will also see to make up other items that go stamps, such as ink and gum,

A dyed-in-the-wool philatelist will be in charge of the exhibit to lecture, and answer questions, of which there will be plenty.

The truck is a 6-ton affair with a wheel base of about 147 inches. It was constructed and equipped in Chi- cago. Painted on the sides are the words. "United States Post Office Department". A shatter-proof glass window will permit observers to view the stamps readily.

course, are not valid for postage, but their use is so wide-spread that they are seriously considered by phi- latelists as well as by anyone inter-

This year's seal will have as its subject the protection of the home Official against the dread malady.

sales of the seal began on Thanks- giving Day and was preceded this year by a special pane or souvenir sheet in a limited edition of 25,000 copies. The pane is 5% by 3% inches and is printed in the same colours as are found on the regular sheets of 100 seals.

Five subjects are illustrated on the pane, four being early leaders in the battle against tuberculosis and the fifth, the 1998 Christmas Seal.
