She reached the back door in time to glimpse the fleeing form of a brown and white setter vanishing through the gate in the hedge. Charcoal, one ear flopping crazily, came and lay down at her feet, whimpering.
"Poor Charcoal," she cooed, strok ing his glossy fur and examining the injured ear. "Did big bully of a dog next door hurt your ear?”
Charcoal whined and whimpered. She picked him up, carried him inside, administered to the ear (which wasn't nearly as bad as it first seemed) and then, eyes blazing in wrath, she stalk- ed through the hedge gata and rapped on the door of the cottage next door. She waited and then rapped again, but no one answered.
