Armed Trawlers Burn Junks In Yangtze Where Shanghai Draws Supplies
Inexplicable action by the Japan- ese: authorities in the Yangtze delta which supplies. Shanghai with most of its food and dairy products is causing consternation to the far- mers and traders between these ports and Shanghai.
Small fleets of armed trawlers and launches have been formed by the Japanese and have descended on the junks, lighters and sampans engaged in the transport of farm products and many boats have been burnt and destroyed for no ap- parent reason. The result is that the food situation may be affected owing to the feeling of uncertainty among the farmers and boat owners engaged in the trade.
Shanghai has long depended on the hinterland of the Lower Yang- tze for its supplies and in the early stages of the hostilities commend- able enterprise on the part of foreign and Chinese interests re-
