TELEVISION BY CABLE SOON

Sir Thomas Gardiner, Director-General of the Post Office, has announced a remarkable cable called the Coascial cable through which 800 separate telephone calls can be conducted at the same time.

The Post Office think the cable, brings nearer the possibility of telephone users "seeing" the people they are talking to at the other end of the line.

Sir Thomas said it was not clear whether the B.B.C. would wish to avail themselves of the cable, but the Post Office had decided to lay a four-tube cable forthwith between London and Birmingham at a cost of £204,000, whether the B.B.C. came in or not.

Referring to television, Sir Thomas explained that program- actress. mes will be distributed from Alex-
