Prohibition Only Applicable To War Materials

"The transportation through Hanoi of obvious war materials for the Chinese Government is de- finitely prohibited, but there are no restric- tions on ordinary merchandise," the "China Mail" was informed by the French Consulate- General to-day.

Inquiry was made as the result of information that a large consignment of motor tyres from Hong Kong to Hanoi had been rejected by a ship- ping company on the ground that it must be accompanied by an express permit from the Consulate-General, which had been refused.

GOOD TASTE BUT METHODS QUESTIONABLE

Suggestion was that the French authorities had given in- structions that no materials which might be adaptable for war purposes should enter French Indo-China ports for transportation to Yunnan or Kwangsi.
