EXPLOSIONS
NEAR CANTON
Troops Still Moving Through To West River
Canton, To-day.
Several explosions of tremendous magnitude were felt in Canton yesterday afternoon, and to- wards dusk large columns of smoke were seen rising into the sky south-west of the city. It is believed the explosions occurred at Fatshan, ten miles south-west of Canton. Meanwhile the procession of Japanese troops and supplies continues to pass through the city to the west. Following a fortnight's black-out, as result of the blowing up of the power station on the East Bund, the new Shameeen plant was operating for the first time last night.
Half the Concession had pow- French
er between 5 p.m. and 1 a.m., and it is hoped that current will be available for twenty hours daily.
This will greatly relieve the in- convenience of lack of ice, and will also enable Shameen to listen in on the radio to news of the world. At present there is com- plete absence of news in the papers.

CARNIVAL DAYS, AT VENICE. The gondola of course plays a big part in the carnival at Venice. But later years have · pro-: duced other and more up-to-date sports, including out-board mo- tor boat racing, which thrills the visitors and inhabitants. However, the carnival has lost none of its picturesque sights and the people who take part in the festival pre dressed in very gaily coloured cos tumés. GERMANY LIKELY TO MAKE
BOMBING PLANE OFFER:
SIR ED. GRIGG SUSPECTS
London, To-day.
There are many reasons for believing that in the next few weeks Germany will renew the offer to abolish bombing planes, declared Lt.-Col. Sir Edward Grigg (Conservative) in the course of the House of Commons debate yesterday. We should welcome it enthusiastically, he declared, but should recognise it as not being made in our interests but in Germany's.
Germany, as a central European
power, has great interest in secur ing abolition of the only weapon which could be used to attack her on her own soil.
This is one instrument col- lective security may be held still to possess.
If there is such·limitation or abolition, it must be on conditions fair to us and to the small nations of Europe, who will have much say on that point. Reuter.
