A RARE EXPERIENCE Prior to the commencement of the first section of the Connaught Handicap, Mr. Needa was given a rare experience, and probably 3 fright, when Pinfarthings straight back to the stable and into the paddock. With his cus- tomary coolness, Mr. Needa man- aged to pull the pony up in time to avert a collision with the rails.

the starting gate, but refused to move on the rise of the barrier. Mr. Needa had no alternative but to return to the stable.

The race started with Cossack's Beauty (Mr. Pih) taking the lead with Oak Bay (Mr. Raymond) in close attendance and following behind came New Star, Red Feather and Potentate. On nearing the 1% mile post, Oak Bay went in front and maintained, its lead until well into the straight, but its effort proved unavailing as shortly after it was passed by both New Star and Red Feather. The last named pony re- sponded beautifully to Mr. Wei's urge and, after overtaking Now Star, went on to win by two lengths, with New Star in front of Potentate, which just managed to beat Cossack's Beauty for third place.

In the absence of Violet Queen in the next race, the Ballarat Handicap, which was a sprint event,

Bredon, ridden by Mr. Proulx, received strong support and was made firm favourite. Bredon did not take the flying start which was expected of it, but even then it had no difficulty in catching _up."

On the rise of the barrier, Strath- carrick Mr. Cyril Gregory' shot_out in front and. was followed by Mac- quarie River, but after passing. the half-mile post it was overhauled by Bredon, which gradually increased its lead and won without being extended. I expect A Lovely Time to do better, but it suffered from a bad start and finished fourth. Strathcarrick seems to be improving and may win a race at a later meeting.

In the Hong Kong Griffins - Cup, contested by Chinaponlea of this season, it was a pity that Expression Time was unable to participate as it was reported to be suffering from some kind of ailment.

As winner of the Rooty-Hill Derby, I expected Tornado Star to be pro- minnent in this race, but it ran un- placed. On the other hand, had Dick Turpin (Mr. Poy) not suffered from an exceedingly bad start, the result might have been different. Never- theless, in taking third place and only being beaten by Aztec by a neck, Dick Turpin performed well and should be borne in mind as a likely winner be- fore the close of "racing this year.

Tornado Star (Mr. Tang) took the lead, closely followed by Ranger, Snowy River, with Dick Turpin in the

rear.

Rounding the bend on the last stretch, Aztec passed Tornado Star, but Mr. Raymond was keeping an eye on the leader and, timing this challen-.. ge to perfection, sent Snowy River through to win by two lengths, with Aztec second and Dick Turpin coming along with a great burst of speed only·· to be beaten into third place by A neck. There were 114 tickets on Snowy River in the double, and each was paid the fairly substantial dividend of $206.00.

The last race, the Kwangtung Han- dicap, which was really the big race of the day, had by this time aroused keen interest with the result of the first prize on the sweep depending on. this event.

The race started with Whalsey. (Mr. Proulx) taking the lead, with Tribute, Estover, Meteor, Coronation Day and Salvage-Master in' the rear. This position was maintained until coming into the straight; when Whalsey had no more fight in it and gave up the struggle,

Tribute came on strongly with Salvage-Master always within striking distance. These two ponies fought out the finish, but Salvage-Master, riddon superbly by Mr. Tao, had the stronger finish, and, responding game- ly to its jockey's urge, won by half a length.
