Harlequins Narrow

Cambridge Beaten By Odd Point

Stirring Rugby At. Twickenham

(By AIR MAIL)

London, October 15.

Harlequins 16 pts.

Cambridge U· 15 pts. Cambridge University, playing their first match of the season in 'London, were beaten by Harle- quins after a stirring second half yesterday by a dropped goal, three penalty goals, and a try (16 points) to three goals (15 points).

A much larger crowd than usual went down to Twickenham in the sunshine, but they must have been sorely disappointed with the first half, at any rate, if they remembered the corresponding match of two years ago, when C.. D. Laborde's team of unknowns, having lost Wooller and Jones, set an irresistible pace. This was an aimless. scramble by comparison; the wonder was that the Harle- quins, with so much of the ball, did Bo little with it, and again the fault was their bunching and lack of thrust' in mid-field.

Though the Harlequins carried near- ly all the scrumamges, "they could not break through a rugged defence, and the fourteen clear points by which they led at half-time all came from goal- kicks. -

BEWILDERED §- ... Cambridge seemed bewildered by the stern reminders of the scrummage laws inflicted by the referee and in this matter there could be no disputing the authority of W. W. Wakefield.. In the opening minute or two the Cambridge forwards were penalised for "foot-up" in front of their posts, and they were pulled up three times soon afterwards for similar offences.

Somewhat surprising in view of Shanghai's record to date but nevertheless very decisively, a combined team from the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and Kowloon Tong Club yesterday beat the Shang- hai Interport lawn bowls team at Kowloon Tong by 23 shots to 19.
