Hankow, To-day.

Japanese advances south and north of the Yangtze River on a number of points forming the outer defence of Wuhan were effectively checked by stubborn Chinese resistance yesterday.

Bloody fighting, with large casualties on both sides, raged fiercest at points southeast. of Ocheng, where the Japanese landed on Octo- ber 23.
