BRITISH TROOPS BIG DRIVE

IN HAIFA AREA

Jerusalem, To-day.

British troops have started a large-scale action in Haifa and the entire Arab quarter of Wadinis- nas has been cordonned off. Houses are being searched and many arrests are being made. Three more Arabs were shot dead in the Old City of Jerusalem. Meanwhile some of the arrested Arabs have been released.

In South Palestine, Arab wreckers have again been busy destroying orange plantations belong- ing to Jewish settlers. An Arab newspaper, rejects a British press proposal for sending Sir Herbert Samuel as representa- tive of the Jews and the Agha Khan as representative of the Arabs to Palestine in an effort to reach agreement between the two parties. The Arab comment says that there is no need for, mediation of this sort, seeing that the present state of affairs in Palestine is the outcome of a dispute between the Arabs and the British mandatory power and not one between Jews and Arabs.

Only person with authority to negotiatiate on behalf of the Arabs of Palestine is the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, and sole aim of any negotiations of this kind would be establishment of Arab indepen- dence. Trans-Ocean.

EGYPTIAN 3-YEAR ARMS PLAN

Some local Chinese are still re- luctant to believe that Canton has fallen to the Japanese.

Yesterday a mosquito vernacular newspaper published a report that General Pai Chung-hsi had dis- guised his troops as Japanese soldiers and had entered Canton "to trap the traitors swarming in the city."
