CHINESE MASSING FOR MAJOR BATTLE Hectic Preparations For Canton's Defence Strong Line From Sheklung To Tsengcho
Canton, To-day.
Hectic preparations are continuing for the defence of Canton, a semi-official spokesman told Reuter.
Hundreds of unreliable reports of the marvellous progress of the Japanese forces hitherto are entirely untrue, and it is maintained that they are spread by Japanese agents.
The Chinese forces are now massing in the hills
west of Pok Lo for a major battle against the Japanese pushing west towards Canton, declar- ed the Chinese military spokesman at a press conference yesterday afternoon.
The Chinese hold a well-constructed defence line between Tsengcho and Sheklung, in the Tayu lower mountain ranges east of the Kowloon- Canton Railway, from which the Japanese are still 20 miles away.

Fifty thousand officials and students of both sexes took part in the parade, which was held for the purpose of rallying the morale of the citizens.
