28-Ton Yacht Beats 12 Metres

STRANGE RACING AT WEYMOUTH

ANOTHER

THE

VICTORY FOR EVAINE

(By "Major B. HECKSTALL-SMITH")

Weymouth, September 1. NHE Royal Thames Y.C. gave the regatta at Weymouth to-day. The club has held regattas at Southend, Ryde and Brixham during the present season.

The morning breeze in the bay died away and there was so little wind that the yachts took 4 hours to sail about 12 miles. Moreover, they were met and baffled by shifts of wind wherever they went and found themselves close hauled upon every leg of the course.

Mr. C. R. Fairey, at the helm of Evaine, won the Twelve Metres race, with Little Astra second, but perhaps the most re- markable feature of a poor day's sport was that Mr. H. M. Crank-

shaw's 28-tonner, Noreen, start-close start in the 12-metre match, and ing a quarter of an hour after these two vessels became six minutes the Twelve Metres, passed them ahead of Evaine and Little Aatra by all by the time "two-thirds of the the time they turned the first mark

Then, sailing slowly to White Nose, the four cutters drew together again. than the bows, but, be that as it may, her performance to-day defeated both criticism and the handicapper.

In the smaller class, the Ten-Metre, Ingeborg, reversed yesterday's result by easily boating the Eight-Metre, Emily 11. There was never a breath of air to enliven the small cutters, such as Admiral of the Fleet, the Earl of Cork and Orrery's Shankiel, and Mr. Cyril Maudslay's Osprey.

PROSPECTS

Problem of Freakes's

Position

Despite secession of many pro- minent players due to expiration of the "time limit,” Oxford Univer- sity look like having quite a strong Rugby fifteen this winter,

H. D. Freakes, the South African and English internationalist, suc- ceeds John Brett in the captaincy, and the new secretary, R. M. Mar- shall, is also an English interna- tionalist.

Freakes's task will be to build in an entirely new three-quarter line, as- suming that he himself reverts to his old position at full back; to find scrum partner to I. H. Watts; and to discover five forwards to support Mar- shall, D. G. Coles, and H. H. Penning- ton, the only three of last year's pack remaining.

Last season, it will be recalled, Freakes moved up into the three- quarter line and F. M. M. Forster. played at full-back. The latter is still available, but his inclusion seems to depend upon his captain's decision.

Among the best-known seniors are: J. H. Bevan (full-back); ...G.. M. HANDICAP (under 25 tons): Hector, F. B. Brandt, T. J. Cowan, R. Sqdn. Ldr. G. H. Reid's Ingeborg (win-Luyt. H. R. G. Parcy (the 1986 Blue), on changing places
