THE DAILY SHORT STORY

SLOGAN

WHEN Bill Williams went into busi~ ness for himself manufacturing oll-devices for gas engines, he decided that first of all he must devise some sort of slogan, — a catchy phrase that would look well on the tattom of ad. vertisements and letterheads.

Al Gliddar

who was Bill's best friend. and had invested some money in the business, heartily endorsed the idea..

"That's a splendid plan, Bill," he said. "It's something you need to at- tract attention to your product. Let's think up something driginal."

2.

And so they set their brains to work, constructing one phrase after another and discarding them. A week later Al was called out of town on business.

"It's no use, Bill" he said wearily, "you'll have to call in an expert. You and I haven't an ounce of originality. And this slogan has got to be original, something that will catch the eye and arouse curiosity.”

Al-departed for a fortnight's stay in a near-by city and Bill again set to work with pencil and paper. He had his own ideas about 'economy, and call- ing in an expert to devise a simple lit

It was at this point that Al Gliddon returned from his business trip.

"For heaven's sake," Bill," he cried, "what kind of a slogan do you call that? Why, there isn't a person who's been able to translate it."

Bill grinned. "Oh, you've heard about it, too?”

****Heard about it! Of course I have. "Who hasn't? Every newspaper in the

country is handing their readers laugh by making a joke of it!” :

"Good!" Bill declared. "That means my idea was a success! And I didn't need an expert to do it, either.'

"Success! What do you mean suc- cess? Didn't I just tell you that no one has been able to decipher your hieroglyphics ?"

Bill shrugged. “What difference does that make? The purpose of a slogan is to attract attention to our products. And that's just what my slogan did. Why, orders have been pouring in here by the bagful. More people are using

tle slogan wasn't one of them.

A few days later Bill had his new letterheads printed, and neatly typed across the bottom of each sheet were the words, Otem Oum Dig Tatum." The same curious phrase appeared on overy: page of his now catalogue. He had several neat cardboard, signs print ed' and hung them in conspicuous places- Fabout his shop.

No one knew what the words meant and-Bul wouldn't let them in on his secret, save to explain that it was his nrm's slogan. Bull, Jr., 14 years old, copied the words and carried them to mis tight school principal, with a re- quest that that individual translate the Blogan into-Buglich. -The principal was willing," but "his" Latin text book only revealed two of the words, and Consequently the translation didn't amount to. much.

than two of them.

'Six days following the posting of his

slogan Bill received a fairly large or

Aloyed his friend suspiciously. "Bill," he remarked slowly, "I think you've put over a fast one. Tell me, just what does Otem Cum Dig Tatum really mean?”

Bill shrugged and regarded Al in mock gravity.

You've guessed it, Al. I've no more idea what "Otem Cum Dig Tatum' means than you. It just popped into my mind and I used it." He grinned broadly. "I've been scared to death that someone would discover that it really did mean something."
