HAMMOND AGAIN HEADS BATTING

LIST

GLAMORGAN BOWLER'S

DISTINCTION

(By AIR MAIL).

London, September 14. ". THE first-class cricket programme for this season ended yesterday, when an England XI, under the title of H. D. G. Leveson-Gower's XI, defeated the Australians at Scarborough.

For the fourth successive year, W. R. Hammond heads the English batting. His average shows an increase of 10.23 runs an innings compared with 1937, but his aggregate failed by 241 to come up to his 3252 of last summer.

Matthews, of Glamorgan, who made few appearances owing to his coaching duties at Stowe, and injuries, tops the bowlers, but the chief feature of the figure is the number of Yorkshiremen who appear among the leaders.

In the batting, Hutton, P. A. Cooper
