COATES FORTUNATE TO SECURE RECOGNITION

(BY "SKIP")

HE Competitions sub-committee of the H.K.L.B.A. · met on Friday night and after a long discussion selected three teams to play against Shanghai, of the arrival of whose team there is still no definite news.

Let me say right away that I consider the selection Com- mittee have come through a trying ordeal! with flying colours: None of us envied them their job. I had a fear in my mind that too much reliance would be placed on what I would call “the old brigade," instead of selecting men who are known to be on the top of their form this season.

I was surprised at one or two selection, as the omission of one or two names were not in ac- cordance with expectations.

It will be seen that there are six "caps" this year, a happy blending of youth (in all but one `case) with ripe experience.

In Dick Alves, there is a very experienced second man, who plays just as well on big occasions as he does in League or friendly matches. He will lend adequate backing. As I have hinted, I think that possibly Teddy Fincher would make a better skip than Jack Hol- lidge, but there is probably little in it, especially as the latter has the advantage of playing on his own green.
