MR. HOU SHU-TUNG, MEMBER OF THE PEOPLE'S POLITICAL COUNCIL AND STANDING MEM- BER OF THE TRADE COMMIS- SION OF THE MINISTRY OF FINANCE, WAS SHOT AND KILLED BY AN ARMED THUG IN HIS RESIDENCE LAST NIGHT.
Five or six men broke into Mr. Hou's house shortly after 7 o'clock and under the pretext of searching for morphine, started to ransack the house for valuables.
Mr. Hou was not in. His wife and children were kept silent at the point of a revolver while the looting was taking place.

The desperadoes took bracelets from Mrs. Hou and press- ed her to open a suitcase. While she was looking for the key, Mr. Hou returned and the thugs, frigh- tened, started to decamp. The last was barred by Mr. Hou. He fired at Mr. Hou point blank.
Mr. Hou, hit in the chest, died on the way to hospital.
A native of Ningho, Hopei, Mr. Hou; 36, was a well-known econo- mist and a former professor of Yenching University, Peiping. He is survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter. Central News.
