Paris, To-day.
The Czech Government note to Britain and France states that it cannot
subscribe to
the Franco-British propositions, which were made without Prague's consent.
The Czech Government asks that the conflict between Ger- many and Czecho-Slovakia should be submitted to arbitra- tion, in accordance with the treaty of 1926.
In London, it is stated that the British and French Minis- ters in Prague were instructed to call on the Czech Foreign Minister last night if possible, and advise the Czech Govern- ment to accept the proposals, as time presses-Reuter.
PAINFUL IMPRESSION ON BRITISH PUBLIC OPINION
London, To-day.
OF WAR TERMINATED Czech Acceptance Report Premature
IT IS NOW QUITE CLEAR THAT THE CZECH GOVERNMENT HAS NOT ACCEPTED THE ANGLO FRENCH PROPOSALS, EXCEPT IN SUCH A FORM AND WITH SUCH RESERVATIONS AS TO CON- STITUTE VIRTUAL REJECTION.
Mr. Neville Chamberlain has postponed his second journey to Germany to meet Herr Hitler and in the meantime little bones is made about the intention of the British and French Governments to bring further pressure on Prague to compel acceptance.
In Prague, the situation is regarded as highly critical. London anxiety has revived as it is felt that delay in Czech acceptance may precipitate disaster, perhaps in the form of a Sudeten German volunteer invasion of Czecho-Slovakia.
The vital Czech Cabinet meeting ended last night and a communique STUDY OF
issued later states that the Government has sent a note to the
British and French Ministers setting forth the Government's PUBLIC OPINION
attitude to the Anglo-French proposals.
The communique adds: "The attitude adopted makes possible fur- ther diplomatic negotiations in the spirit of conciliation which the Czech Government has always shown.” Reuter learns that the note is an acceptance in principle but makes
a number of important reservations. The situation is regarded as very critical.
