M.C.C. S. AFRICAN TOURING XI WIN FIRST MATCH

The M.C.C. team for South Africa this winter, played their first match against a Gentlemen and Players eleven, who replaced H. D. G. Le- ́véson-Gower's eleven, and won a comfortable victory by 5 wickets, Joe Hardstaff, the England and Nottinghamshire. batsman, just reaching his century, whiles Smailes, of Yorkshire, was in good form with the ball to take 5 for 67.

In another match, at Folkestone, England Past and Present and Sir Pelham Warner's eleven were fea- tured in a drawn match, rain caus- ing the abondonment of play.

As anticipated, S. A. and H. D. Rumjaha entered the semi-final of the Colony Hardcourt Tennis Dorî- bles Championship, at the U.S.R.C. yesterday by defeating ̈· ́Albert. Chan' and J. Hsu 6-4, 6-4.
E. C. Fincher and A. V. Remedios beat Major F. T. Baines and Major E, A. Newnham 6-3, 6-3.
Pang Oi-lam and Mok Fuk-in beat D. S. Sze and F. Grose 6–2, 6-2.
The singles match between J.-J. Ferguson and Wong Fuk-nam was postponed until Sunday.
The final of the Doubles Cham- pionship has been fixed for Sun- day, September 18. Lady Northcote will distribute the prizes and. His Excellency will be present.
