Comparatively poor times were returned by swimmers partici- pating in the Hong Kong Area (Army) Individual Swimming Cham- pionships yesterday afternoon in the V.R.C. Pool, these serving as recommendations for the selection of Army swimmers for the in 68 secs, the latter evidently feel- Colony Championships, to be held under the auspices of the Victoria ing the effects of his 440 yards Recreation Club next week.
-
Probably the best race of the day was the first heat of the 440 yards free style which saw only two competitors conclude the dis- tance, Lieut. J. M. Calvert winning from Gnr. Norman in 6 mins. 11 4-5 secs. after the latter had led for just under 300 yards.
Calvert swam a splendidly| judged race and made the most of the 16 turns, taking his time in order to ensure a good push off the wall, while Norman seemed to tire at every turn after the 150 yard mark.
Chart Of Heat 1
Norman shot off at a fast pace and maintained a lead of about two to three yards, but Calvert in- variably cut down his arrears on the turns, the following table show- ing the respective times of the two swimmers at every 50 yard mark:

The second heat of the 440 saw another interesting, although not quite so fast a race in which Lieut. T. D. Lawrie (Royal Scots) came first in 6.mins. 44 1-5 secs, while L/Sergt. Dibben (5th A.A.) was
second in 6 mins, 53 1-5 secs.
EARLY LEAD MAINTAINED Lawrie shot into a quick lead which he maintained through- out, at one time, early in the race, being challenged by L/Bdr. Marshall (5th A.A.) and later by L/Sergt. Dibben, but Lawrie's finishing spurt was too much and he won by several yards.
Lawrie employed the trudgeon stroke as a relief to his crawl and only used the latter stroke when any of the other swimmers attempt- ed to shorten the distance between them.

"HAVE AN H.B. AND THEN TRY"
The 50 yards free-style heats did not produce any good times, Lieut. Lawrie returning 29 1-5 secs. to re- cord the best of the afternoon, while Lieut. R. A. Barron (R.E.) was second in 29 2-5 secs. Tptr. Thompson (R.A.) also returned a 29 1-5 in the second heat of the 50, but turned badly and followed a zig-zag course.
-FIRST-SUCCESS-
The 100 Yards breast-stroke saw Gnr. Norman record his first suc- cess of the afternoon when he beat Pte. Harris (R.A.M.C.), în 84 4-5 secs., Harris clocking 86·1-5 secs. Harris would undoubtedly have given Norman a better race had he started properly, but was fully a second slow in getting off the mark. In the Officers' 100 Yards free- style Championship, Lieut, R. A. Barron Just beat Lieut. T. D. Lawrie
