Bruen Beats Own Record
James Bruen, who held the amateur record for the reconstructed Port- marnock course-73, made in the last Irish Open Golf Championship-beat it by three strokes on August 11.
Bruen, whose fine form helped Munster to win the first inter-provin- cial match, was out in 86 and home in 34, his figures being:-

Only one Open Championship 'tes was in use, but the others were longer than usual. A strong wind made conditions difficult.
LARWOOD'S ABSENCE DUE TO KNEE TROUBLE
London, August 7,, (By Air Mail). The Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club have, through their secretary, Mr. H. A. Brown, announced the fact that Larwood's prolonged absence from the game is due to continued knee trouble, "Larwood has repeatedly been examined by a specialist, who cer- tified him unfit to bowl at the pre- sent time," stated Mr. Brown yes- terday.
