JAPANESE SETBACK IN TWO YANGTSE SECTORS Advance On Matou Hurled Back With Heavy Loss
Chinese Carry First Line Near Juichang
Shanghai, To-day.
No big battle was reported to have occurred in the Kiukiang area yesterday, but it is stated that the Japanese have lost their first line in the Jui- chang region when a surprise infantry attack was carried out just before dawn.
The positions this morning were unchanged and the atmosphere is said to be calm, even the ar- tillery batteries on both sides having slackened fire.
It is, however, believed that the Japanese are merely waiting for reinforcements and are preparing for a counter-attack.
