In opening the case for the State of New York against the Tammany Hall chief, James J. Hines, the New York District Attorney, Mr. Thomas Dewey, told the jury that the "Dutch" Schultz gang had advertised throughout the underworld that Hines was the political protec- tor of the multi-million dollar policy racket (the Numbers Lottery).
Dewey alleged that defendant was present in 1932 when the Schultz gang planned to take over the policy racket, which was then operating on a small-scale, and said that Hines was able to - show Schultz that many "policy" cases were thrown out of Court, although the police had staged "perfect raids."
The prosecuting attorney also] asserted that "Dutch" Schultz took over the racket by the use of gun- men, beating-ups and murder.
After organising the racket with political protection, Schultz har- vested over $45,000 daily during 1983, or a total of about 20 million dollars for the year.
It is said that Hines. received $500 weekly in cash.
