The Army netted midway through the second half after the ball had gone out of play, while the home team equalised as the final whistle went.

Both teams were very evenly matched, contrary to expecta- tions, and the "Y" defence more than held their own in the opening period when they defended the deep-end against the excellent Army attack, Webb, the “Y” goalkeeper, and Banham, at centre-half, be- ing brilliant. The latter had actually the harder of the two tasks as Stemp, the Army leader, had a tremendous reach, but his dan- gerous backhand attempts to score were frustrated throughout.

The success of the game was to a large extent due to the brilliant handling by the' Referee, Mr. E. W. “Eric" Railton, former Colony Interporter and a former captain of swimming at the "Y".

C.M. Silva & F.X. Soares New Pairs Champions

AWN Bowls of a high standard was witnessed at the Civil Ser- vice Cricket Club Green yesterday afternoon when the final of the Open Pairs Lawn Bowls Championship between C. M. Silva and F. X. Soares and J. S. Howell and R. G. Craig resulted in a win for the former pair by 27 shots to 9, the Portuguese players scoring on 16 of the heads.

What was generally expected to be a close affair resulted in a runaway victory for the Portuguese couple whose victory was due in no small measure to Silva's splendid form. He drew with un- canny accuracy on both hands and though Howell also sent down some good woods, had the latter generally beaten.

WEBB MAGNIFICENT Both goalkeepers played a stirling game, Webb giving a magnificent exhibition in the opening half when he pushed several terrific shots from Stemp over the bar for fruit- less corners. Both custodians distributed the ball well and on no occasion gave cause for anxiety.
