CURRENCY

NOTE ORDER

Peiping, To-day.

Despite the fact that the Provisional Government in February stated that the Han- kow Government's notes would be allowed to circulate for one year at par with the Federal Reserve notes, an order to-day states that from to-morrow such notes must circulate at 90 per cent. of their face value.

AUSTRALIAN WIFE

The South Australian" wife of John Bruce Thornton, who was sentenced at Birmingham to sever [years' penal servitude for the plot to kidnap Lord Nuffeld, and his relatives warmly defend his character in spite of the revela- tions made about his previous life.

They often sat round the same fireside in the suburban home of her brother, Melville 'Ridgway, at Adelaide.

Mrs. Thornton last night emerg- ged from the temporary anony- mity now forced upon her.

The accompanying explana- tion says that the Federal Re- serve notes have appreciated, while the Hankow notes have depreciated, but it is pointed out here that even Japanese establishments accept them at

"My only grievance against. par with the Yen, while Chin-

him," she said, "is that he has me since we ese business

made no provision fór : establishments always give five to eight per

parted. cent. more for Hankow Gov-

ernment notes

The new. currency order ap- pears to carry no weight with the Federal Reserve Bank, which has flatly refused "des- preciated" notes in exchange for its own currency.

Daily dealings in Hankow and Federal Reserve notes have stopped entirely, the Chinese refusing to part with their Hankow notes at the decreed rate.

The general public is ignor ing the new order which pears to be still-born.--Reuter.

STATION MASTER AVERTS TRAIN DISASTER

Peiping, To-day.

The bravery of a Chinese Station Master near Ching- wangtao saved many lives on Friday evening.

Guerillas, who are most ac- tive along that region, tore up several sections of the track, just before the arrival of the express from Mukden.

The Stationmaster at a way- side station learned of this afrat great personal risk from guerilla's bullets and the on- rushing train, stood at the break waving a red flag and mandged to bring the train up. within a few yards of disaster. -Reuter.

"My present position is awk-

·ward. I am still his legal wife.

"While we lived together I en- joyed every comfort. ́ I am now' compelled to wash dishes and. polish floors as a hospital servant at 22s. 6d, a week. How times have: changed!

"Once I employed my own staff of servants. Now I cannot take a better job because of the humiliating publicity of this case."

Mrs. Thornton will seek legal advice to find out if she can have her marriage dissolved in view of her husband's sentence and previous desertion..
