JAPANESE NAVAL ACTION IN TSINGTAO
The following information has been received from a local firm:
"Upon ordering supplies of Alca Mineral Water from the Laoshan Iltis Mineral Water Factory, which is owned by Melchers and Co., Shanghai, it was stated that the Japanese naval authorities in Tsing- tao, where the factory is situated, had declined to issue a permit for the export to Hong Kong.
Since export from Japan to Hong Kong of other goods has been pro- hibited under the pretext that the same might be used by the Chinese Military Authorities for military purposes, it is feared that also Mineral Water will now fall under this clause.
Alca Water has actually been
shipped for years from Tsingtao to Hong Kong for local consumption, and the difficulties raised by the Japanese Authorities at Tsingtao appear rather farfetched.
It is furthermore feared that the from 2.50 present action indicates that the Japanese authorities are endeavour- 3.50ing to stop foreign trade in the Far East, and that certain over- eager officials are not paying any consideration to foreign-owned fac- tories.
