Here's the first of a short series of tennis tips practise them in front of a looking-glass before you go on to the court.
Before you can begin to play the game you must know how to hold your racket correctly and learn how to make these three strokes:

3. Pick up the racket using the correct grip and swing it easily as though hitting a ball. Try several in this way till you find one that feels really comfortable.
THE GRIP.—1. Hold the racket] at the end of the handle.
Here is a good way to get the correct grip. Pick the racket up be- tween the half-open thumb and first finger of the right hand so that the handle fits into the space, then clasp the other fingers round so that. the thumb just overlaps the first finger. In other words, shake hands with it.
2. Hold the racket out almost at arm's length and so that there is no angle between it and the wrist. Try to make it a continuation of the hand.
3. The "head" of the racket must always be just above the wrist, never below it.
4. The grip must be firm but not strained.
