ENTRIES to the number of 268 will again make a great golf Green (Burnham Becches:)

parade of the Open, Championship which is to be played on the Royal St. George's course, Sandwich, beginning Monday, July 4, (to-day) with qualifying rounds there and on Prince's Course to-day and to-morrow (July 5). The Championship proper will start on Wednesday, July 6.

The official reminder of the closing date did not suggest such a big-scale mobilisation for the title; rather, on the contrary, did it indicate an abnormally low entry, but hint or S O S, however the R. and A., notice may be interpreted, it has been effective. The number is only ten short of last year's muster at Carnoustie, though 44 fewer than when the event was held on the same course four years ago. :

But as compared with last year and other years the United States challenge is but a faint shadow of what it has been, and the probabi- lity is that Henry Cotton, who will defend his title, will find his stern- 'est opposition from home golf with Bobby Locke, the young South African prodigy, as the strongest outside challenger.

It was a shock to me to find that I would be unable to play at Sandwich, but it is entirely
