Raised To 45,000 Tons Maximum

The First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr. A. Duff Cooper, announced in the House of Commons yesterday that the naval agreement concluded by Britain, the United States and France in 1936 had been supplemented by an agreement which raises the tonnage limit for battleships from 35,000 to 45,000 while it retains the pre- vious maximum calibre for heavy guns of 16 inches.

Mr. Duff Cooper explained that the maximum ton- nage of 45,000 which was exceeding the ton- nage limits proposed by the British Govern- ment was the lowest limit on which an agree- ment could be reached.
