very much to the play. West opened the ten of hearts and Declarer, after picking up the widow and discarding his only heart, was able to trump the opening lead. Fortunately for South the trumps were evenly divided, so that he lost only one trick in eagles, diamonds and clubs.
East and West should have de- fended at six spades. By placing the widow in the East hand and discarding, a diamond, only three ticks would have been lost. The penalty of 200 points would have been well worth while.
